Vocabulary teaching

At first, thanks that group one gives us a great presentation, which is vocabulary teaching. Group one did it good at various activities and active teaching styles. However, this presentation should be focused more specifically on vocabulary. It covered too much from vocabulary to grammar. In my point of view, grammatical rules of comparison should be eliminated. In short, group one do did a good demo for us to follow.

Teaching vocabulary is not an easy task. As we were at high schools, the only way for us to learn vocabulary is through memorizing deliberately. However, learning vocabulary through context is the better way. Learning vocabulary by means of reading materials is much easier because it is connected with real life. Moreover, incidental learning can be used in context-based instruction. Wide exposures to reading are the best way to acquire vocabulary incidentally.

My teaching philosophy

As an English teacher, we have to consider at least three domains, that is, cognitive, affective and psychmotor domains. It is the basic principle for teachers to consider these entirely while teaching. Therefore, for me , as a language teacher, we should design curriculums and adapt techniques based on studnets’ levels and needs. In short, being a humanistic teacher who takes students’ affective domains into consider is my teaching philosophy. Learner-centered, learner autonomy, and respecting individual differences are what I will take into account while instructing.

In my opinion, I regard teaching as craft and science. English teaching should base on scientific theories, such as information processing system, cognitive developmental stages, acquisition process, comprehensible input and so on so that teachers can design suitable pedagogy to fit students learning stages. After applying theories to practicum, English teaching becomes a craft.

As I mentioned previously, in order to teach teach properly, English teachers should at least familiarize with Bloom’s taxonomy, Piaget’s cognitive developmental stages and educational psychology. It is still not enough to be a good teacher although we are familiar with theories. We should open our mind to accept the process of trials and errors in language teaching. Modify our teaching timely and emulate others’ are the best way to be a good language teacher.
